After strangling a classmate to prove they can commit the perfect murder, two young men host a dinner party for his family and friends with the body hidden in plain sight. Farley Granger and John Dall carry the gathering’s brittle mix of vanity, nerves, and private triumph, while James Stewart’s former teacher starts to notice that the evening’s conversation has taken a strange turn. Alfred Hitchcock stages the film almost entirely inside one apartment, using long, flowing takes to keep the guests circulating around a buffet table that holds far more than dinner.
