Denzel Washington is Philadelphia homicide detective John Hobbes, who witnesses the execution of a notorious serial killer and then finds the murders starting up again in the same unmistakable pattern. With his partner, Jonesy (John Goodman), Hobbes chases what looks like a copycat case, but the evidence keeps pushing past police logic and into something darker. Gregory Hoblit’s thriller threads homicide-procedural detail through religious imagery, whispered taunts, and a citywide sense that evil may have survived the death row chamber.
