In 1849 Baltimore, Edgar Allan Poe is drawn into a murder hunt when a serial killer begins staging crimes lifted from his stories. John Cusack is Poe at the end of his life, forced into an uneasy alliance with a young detective (Luke Evans) as each new killing turns his fiction into evidence. As the case tightens and the attacks grow more personal, Poe races through theaters, alleys, newspaper offices, and high-society gatherings to get ahead of a killer who seems to know his work as well as he does. Alice Eve appears as the woman closest to him as the pursuit closes in.
