In 1975 Cambodia, five-year-old Loung is pulled out of family life when the Khmer Rouge takes power, and survival quickly becomes the only thing that matters. Angelina Jolie directs the story in Khmer from a child’s-eye view, with Sareum Srey Moch at the center and Phoeung Kompheak and Sveng Socheata among the family around her. As the regime tightens its grip, the film follows Loung through forced labor, separation, and the constant threat of state violence, keeping close to what she can see, hear, and understand.
