On the eve of retirement, Captain Nathan Brittles takes one last U.S. Cavalry patrol into dangerous territory, trying to head off an impending attack while escorting two women away from an exposed fort. John Wayne is Brittles, an aging officer whose final assignment is pulled between military orders, camp tensions, and the day-to-day work of keeping his group together on the trail. With Joanne Dru among the civilians whose presence complicates the mission, the story keeps close to outpost routines, patrols, and hard decisions in the field.
