Charles keeps showing up at weddings with the same close-knit group of friends, but meeting Carrie at one ceremony leaves the committed bachelor rethinking his carefully uncommitted life. Hugh Grant is Charles, a reserved Englishman who never quite says what he means, while Carrie (Andie MacDowell) keeps drifting in and out of his orbit as the group moves from one celebration to the next, and eventually to a funeral. Around them, friends and former flames pair off, clash, and reveal old attachments, giving the story the shape of a romantic ensemble built around formal occasions, missed chances, and badly timed honesty.
