In the East End of London, a group of nurse midwives serves families through home births, crowded tenements, and a health system under strain from the late 1950s into the 1970s. Each case brings them into the middle of private crises and public change: difficult pregnancies, poverty, illness, stigma, and the everyday demands of raising children with too little money or support. As they move from one household to the next, the women at Nonnatus House balance medical work with the emotional weight of the lives around them. Jenny Agutter and Laura Main are among the ensemble in a series that follows both the patients they help and the nurses’ own shifting lives.
