A Scanner Darkly

In a not-too-distant California, undercover cop Fred is assigned to track the spread of Substance D, a drug that fractures the mind even as it tightens its hold on the people around him. Keanu Reeves is Fred, working inside a haze of dealers, informants, and constant surveillance until the case starts eroding his sense of who he is. Richard Linklater adapts Philip K. Dick through a digitally animated look that keeps faces and rooms in a wavering, unstable state, with Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder, and Woody Harrelson moving through the same paranoid world.
