When his girlfriend leaves him for a suave Frenchman, good-natured astronomer Sam heads to New York and takes up residence in an abandoned building across from her apartment, sure he can wait things out and win her back. Matthew Broderick is Sam; watching from the shadows, he meets Meg Ryan’s Maggie, a sharp-edged photographer who was dumped by the same man. The two become reluctant partners, spying on their exes and cooking up ways to embarrass them, even as the setup starts shifting the balance between all four.
