A clarinet-playing health food store owner from 1973 is revived in 2173 and dropped into a tightly controlled future America, where a rebel group wants his help against the government. Woody Allen is Miles Monroe, a man hopelessly out of step with a world of robots, surveillance, disguises, and strange state science. Diane Keaton turns up among the people Miles collides with as his accidental role in the resistance keeps growing. The film imagines the future as a polished police state and uses that setting for jokes about sex, technology, bureaucracy, and the gap between counterculture ideals and official control.
