Forty-year-old misanthrope Guy Trilby crashes the National Golden Quill Spelling Bee by exploiting a loophole that lets him compete against children. Jason Bateman is Guy, an eighth-grade dropout whose foul-mouthed taunts and refusal to act his age turn the contest into a running scandal. As outraged parents and bee officials try to force him out, a reporter (Kathryn Hahn) keeps digging for the reason he entered in the first place. Rohan Chand’s Chaitanya, an awkward 10-year-old contestant who isn’t put off by Guy’s behavior, becomes an unexpected presence at his side as the competition moves forward.
