Transferred to the Eastern Front during World War II, a platoon of German soldiers is thrown into the Battle of Stalingrad, where every advance leaves fewer men standing and military discipline gives way to hunger, cold, and panic. Dominique Horwitz's platoon lieutenant tries to hold his unit together after devastating losses, while Thomas Kretschmann is among the exhausted soldiers caught between Soviet fire and the brutality of their own commanders. Told from the German side of the siege, the film stays close to the men as comradeship erodes and the ruins of Stalingrad close in around them.
