Emily Mortimer is Lizzie, a single mother who keeps moving from town to town with her nine-year-old son Frankie (Jack McElhone), most recently landing in a seaside Scottish community. Frankie is deaf, and to shield him from the truth about his absent father, Lizzie has been writing letters in the father’s name, spinning stories of life aboard the HMS Accra. When Frankie learns the ship is about to dock nearby, the fiction she built for him collides with the world outside their door, forcing Lizzie to find a stranger who can step into the role for a single day.
