The Stranger
CrimeDramaMysteryThriller96 min
A War Crimes Commission investigator follows the trail of an infamous Nazi to a quiet Connecticut town, where the fugitive may be hiding as respected professor Charles Rankin. Edward G. Robinson is Wilson, the patient investigator piecing together Rankin’s habits and lies, while Orson Welles’s professor is about to marry Mary, the Supreme Court justice’s daughter, with Loretta Young at the center of that household. Directed by Welles, the film places postwar suspicion inside an orderly New England setting, where church bells, polite dinners, and a looming clock tower become part of the search.
