Reporter Stew Smith (Robert Williams) thinks he’s landed a fairy-tale match when he marries Jean Harlow’s upper-crust socialite Ann Schuyler, but married life quickly turns into a battle over class, manners, and who gets to define him. Pulled from the newsroom and pressed into high-society routines, Stew starts to chafe at the polished world he’s married into and looks for an outlet in writing. Loretta Young’s Gallagher, a fellow reporter and close friend, stays in his orbit as the marriage strains. Frank Capra frames the romance around newspaper wisecracks, social climbing, and the gap between Park Avenue wealth and working-reporter instincts.
