In feudal Japan, a wandering swordsman is pulled into a hidden war after he wipes out a band of attackers and crosses paths with a government spy investigating a massacre. The killings point to the Eight Devils of Kimon, a group of superhuman warriors tied to a plot that threatens the shogunate itself. As Jubei is forced into the mission, each step brings another ambush, poison trap, or impossible opponent, including enemies who can turn their bodies into living weapons. Alongside a female ninja whose touch carries its own danger, he cuts through a chain of conspiracies that keeps widening beyond a single village or clan.
