40 Days and 40 Nights

ComedyRomance96 min

After a breakup leaves him stuck between heartbreak and casual hookups, San Francisco web designer Matt Sullivan takes an extreme Lenten vow: no sex of any kind for 40 days and 40 nights. Josh Hartnett is Matt, whose attempt at self-discipline quickly stops being private as friends, coworkers, and old flames start watching the countdown. Then Erica enters the picture, with Shannyn Sossamon bringing a low-key counterpoint to Matt's increasingly frantic resolve. Michael Lehmann's 2002 romantic comedy runs on public bets, bad timing, and the awkward gap between wanting connection and trying to avoid it.
