The Big Sick

ComedyDramaRomance120 min

Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani is juggling a fledgling stand-up career and the steady pressure of his family’s expectations when he falls for grad student Emily (Zoe Kazan). Their relationship runs into familiar fault lines around culture and commitment, then turns sharply when Emily is hospitalized with a sudden illness. Left in the waiting room with her parents, Emily’s blunt mother Beth (Holly Hunter) and guarded father Terry (Ray Romano), Kumail has to face the life he’s been leading onstage, at home, and with the woman he may lose. The story draws from Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon’s own relationship.
