Promised Land
Drama106 min
Matt Damon is Steve Butler, a salesman for a natural-gas company who arrives in a struggling rural Pennsylvania town expecting to secure drilling rights with little resistance. Working alongside Frances McDormand's Sue Thomason, he assumes hard times have made the deal simple: cash in exchange for access to the land beneath local farms. Instead, town meetings turn contentious as a respected teacher and a young activist challenge the company’s promises, pushing Steve into a widening dispute over jobs, property, and who gets to define the town’s future. Gus Van Sant directs a story rooted in back-room pitches, public hearings, and the pressures facing a fading small town.
