In Los Angeles, master thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) leads a disciplined crew through a string of high-stakes robberies while Al Pacino's Vincent Hanna, an LAPD detective in Robbery-Homicide, refuses to let him slip away. After a job turns bloody, the pursuit tightens into a wary contest between two men who recognize the other's precision and obsession. Val Kilmer is one of McCauley's closest partners, as the film moves between planning, surveillance, and the strain the case puts on both men's personal lives. Michael Mann gives the city a cool, nocturnal sheen of freeways, diners, and downtown gunfire.
