Clint Eastwood is Frank Corvin, a retired Air Force test pilot whose shot at space was scrapped in 1958 when Project Daedalus was pushed aside by the new NASA program. When a failing Russian communications satellite threatens to crash to Earth, Frank forces his way back into the mission and reunites his old teammates, including Hawk Hawkins (Tommy Lee Jones). Donald Sutherland and James Garner round out the crew as fellow ex-pilots suddenly dropped into a modern space operation. The setup leans on the clash between NASA procedure and these old-school flyers, all chasing the mission they lost decades earlier.
