Jennifer Lawrence is Joy Mangano, a struggling Long Island single mom in the 1990s whose homemade invention pulls her from a crowded family life into the rougher business of factories, patents, and television sales. Based on a true story, the film follows Joy as she tries to turn one product into a company while dealing with relatives who depend on her, doubt her, or complicate the work. Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper move through that push-and-pull of family and commerce as Joy fights for ownership of her idea and a place in a world not built for her.
