Audition

DramaHorrorMystery115 min

Seven years after his wife’s death, widower Shigeharu Aoyama turns to a film producer friend for help finding a new partner, and the two stage a fake audition to meet eligible women. Ryo Ishibashi is Shigeharu, a lonely middle-aged man who becomes drawn to Asami (Eihi Shiina), a quiet applicant whose poise stands out immediately. As their relationship moves forward, the scheme behind their first meeting starts to matter in unsettling ways, and small inconsistencies around Asami begin to accumulate. Takashi Miike’s film starts from an intimate, everyday premise and lets tension build through suggestion, awkwardness, and the gaps between what characters say and what they hide.
