To Sir, with Love

Drama105 min

Out-of-work engineer Mark Thackeray takes a teaching job at a rough secondary school in London’s East End, where a class of hostile older students has already driven off one teacher. Sidney Poitier is Thackeray, a British Guianese newcomer who answers taunts and defiance with firm rules, direct respect, and an insistence that his pupils be treated as young adults. Christian Roberts’ Denham and Judy Geeson’s Pamela are part of a graduating class pushing back against him at every turn, as the classroom becomes a meeting point for class tension, race, and the uneasy step from school into working life.
