Frankie Paige, a Pittsburgh hairdresser with no strong religious beliefs, is suddenly hit by violent episodes and mysterious wounds that mirror the crucifixion. Patricia Arquette’s Frankie becomes the focus of Vatican scrutiny, and Rev. Andrew Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne) is sent to determine whether she is witnessing a miracle or being targeted by something supernatural. Jonathan Pryce appears as the cardinal overseeing the inquiry, as the case widens from Frankie’s everyday life in Pennsylvania to the Church’s highest ranks. Religious imagery, bodily suffering, and mounting suspicion drive the story as Kiernan tries to understand what is happening before Frankie is consumed by it.
