David is a robotic boy programmed to love, adopted by a Cybertronics employee and his wife as a test case in a future where mecha live alongside humans. Haley Joel Osment gives David a childlike certainty that makes his place in the family feel intimate and uneasy at once, especially as Frances O'Connor's Monica becomes the center of his world. When that arrangement breaks apart, David is pushed into a harsher landscape of robot spectacle and human resentment, where he crosses paths with Jude Law's Gigolo Joe. Steven Spielberg directs the story as both family drama and futuristic fable.
