After pouring everything into a Victorian fixer-upper in San Francisco, a couple takes on tenants to cover the mortgage — and one renter turns their dream house into a trap. Melanie Griffith and Matthew Modine are the homeowners, struggling to finish renovations and hold on to the property as ordinary landlord disputes start to spiral. Michael Keaton is the lodger at the center of it, using charm, delay, and intimidation to exploit every opening he can find. What begins as a practical arrangement becomes a battle over space, money, and control inside the walls of the house itself.
