David Byrne leads a filmed Broadway performance built around movement, song, and an 11-member ensemble of musicians, singers, and dancers carrying wireless instruments across an open stage. Shot at New York’s Hudson Theatre, Spike Lee’s film follows Byrne and performers including Jacqueline Acevedo through selections from American Utopia alongside songs from across Byrne’s career. The staging is spare and constantly in motion, with choreographed group numbers, spoken interludes, and a focus on connection, civic life, and social justice as the company moves as a single unit and then breaks into individual moments.
