After his mother dies of an overdose, 17-year-old Joshua “J” is taken in by the Australian relatives he barely knows—a criminal family led by his calculating grandmother. James Frecheville is J, quiet and out of his depth as he’s absorbed into a household of armed robbers, drug dealers, and sudden violence. At the center is Janine (Jacki Weaver), whose warmth and control keep everyone in line. As police close in and tensions inside the family sharpen, detective Leckie, with Guy Pearce as the one officer trying to reach J, offers him another path beyond the clan’s rules.
