When 1950s quiz-show regular Herb Stempel is pushed aside on Twenty-One for polished newcomer Charles Van Doren, he goes public with a claim the game is rigged. John Turturro is Stempel, a disgruntled former winner watching the show remake itself around a more telegenic contestant, while Ralph Fiennes’s Van Doren becomes the new face of TV intellect. As congressional lawyer Richard Goodwin begins investigating, Robert Redford’s film follows the widening scandal through studio offices, hearing rooms, and the uneasy overlap of entertainment, status, and public trust.
