The Two Popes

ComedyDrama125 min

Frustrated with the direction of the Catholic Church, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio asks to retire in 2012, only to be summoned to Rome by Pope Benedict XVI for a series of private conversations. Jonathan Pryce is Bergoglio, a reform-minded cleric whose plainspoken style puts him at odds with Anthony Hopkins’s Benedict, an intellectual conservative facing scandal and doubt inside the Vatican. As the two men argue over faith, responsibility, and the future of the church, the film moves between papal ritual, closed-door debate, and the uneasy bond forming between a reigning pope and the man who may succeed him.
