The Rum Diary

ComedyDramaRomance120 min

Burned out on New York and the buttoned-down mood of late Eisenhower-era America, journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) heads to Puerto Rico to work at a struggling San Juan newspaper. He slips into the island’s rum-soaked nightlife under the weary editor Lotterman, then gets tangled up with Chenault (Amber Heard) and her fiancé, Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart), an American developer chasing lucrative beachfront deals. When Sanderson asks Kemp to use his writing to help sell one of those schemes, the job he came south to escape turns into a test of where his loyalties — and his voice — belong.
