Kôichi Nishi has spent years working his way into a powerful company, then marries the disabled daughter of its vice president as part of a plan tied to his father’s death. Toshirô Mifune is Nishi, a young executive moving through the polished rituals of postwar corporate Japan with revenge in mind. At the wedding reception, a cake modeled on company headquarters stirs up memories of a hushed-up scandal, and the men Nishi has targeted start to see the trap around them. Akira Kurosawa frames the story as a loose echo of Hamlet, with Masayuki Mori’s Iwabuchi at the center of the boardroom corruption Nishi wants exposed.
