In 1950s Indiana, Gene Hackman is Norman Dale, a failed college coach hired to lead a high school basketball team in a tiny town where the whole community watches every decision. Dale’s temper and unorthodox methods quickly put him at odds with players, parents, and local expectations, especially after the team’s star player steps away from the court to focus on school. His most controversial choice is naming Dennis Hopper’s Shooter — a local alcoholic with a troubled reputation — as his assistant, turning the season into a public test of authority, trust, and small-town pressure.
