When a newborn is abandoned, Charles Chaplin’s Little Tramp takes the child in and raises him in poverty, improvising a home and a hustle as the boy grows up beside him. Jackie Coogan gives the kid a quick, canny presence that matches Chaplin beat for beat, while the child’s mother (Edna Purviance), now in very different circumstances, longs to find her son again. Written, directed, and led by Chaplin, the silent black-and-white film pairs street-corner slapstick with the uncertain life of this makeshift family.
