In Old West New Mexico, two hired lawmen come to a small town controlled by a powerful rancher and set out to restore order. Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen are the longtime partners at the center of the standoff, moving through a world of saloons, back-room deals, and sudden violence, while Jeremy Irons’s rancher keeps the town under his thumb. The job gets messier with the arrival of a young widow, played by Renée Zellweger, whose presence begins to strain the bond between the two men. What starts as a straightforward effort to police the town turns into a test of loyalty, authority, and trust.
