After twelve years in prison for a murder he did not commit, detective Charlie Crews returns to the Los Angeles police force with a damaged reputation, a large settlement, and an unnervingly calm way of seeing the world. Back on the job, he works cases that range from street killings to tightly hidden conspiracies, noticing details other detectives miss and pushing past tidy explanations. His new partner, Dani Reese, has to figure out whether his odd methods are brilliance, trauma, or both. As Crews solves crimes, he also keeps digging into the frame-up that stole his old life and may still be protecting dangerous people.
