DocumentaryDrama115 min

Jean-Luc Godard alternates between documentary footage of the Rolling Stones recording “Sympathy for the Devil” at Olympic Studios in London and five staged vignettes about race, revolution, media, and violence in 1968 Europe. Mick Jagger is at the center of the studio sessions, with Keith Richards and the rest of the band revising the song through repeated takes. Between those passages, actors and nonactors move through junkyards, bookstores, and political set pieces, delivering slogans, interviews, and confrontational sketches that connect pop music to the upheaval and rhetoric of the late 1960s.
