Almost a decade after glam-rock star Brian Slade vanished from public life, journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale) is assigned to find out what happened to the idol who once defined him. His reporting circles back to early-'70s London and New York, where Jonathan Rhys Meyers' Slade turns pop stardom into theater alongside wife Mandy (Toni Collette) and the American rocker Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor). Todd Haynes builds the story from interviews, tabloid lore, and stage performances, tracing how Brian Slade became a glittering public image and a mystery Arthur can’t quite leave behind.
