Ramanand Sagar’s 1987 adaptation of the ancient Hindu epic brings the Ramayana to television, drawing primarily on Valmiki’s Ramayan and Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas. Arun Govil and Deepika Chikhalia lead the central story, with Sunil Lahri and Arvind Trivedi among the key faces in a large ensemble. The series follows the family ties, vows, betrayals, and conflicts at the heart of one of India’s foundational myths, moving from courtly life and exile to war and divine intervention. Rooted in religious tradition and epic storytelling, it unfolds with the ceremonial style and moral focus of classic Indian television.
