An elderly couple leave their quiet seaside village for postwar Tokyo, hoping to spend time with the grown children whose lives have moved on without them. Chishû Ryû and Chieko Higashiyama are Shukichi and Tomi, parents met with polite affection but little room in the schedules of their son Koichi, a doctor, and daughter Shige, a hairdresser. The one family member who offers them steady care is Setsuko Hara’s Noriko, the widow of their younger son, whose visits bring out the film’s close attention to duty, grief, and the small frictions of family life.
