Pocahontas

ActionAdventureAnimationDramaFamilyMusicalRomance85 min

Amid the arrival of English colonists in 17th-century Virginia, Pocahontas, the daughter of her tribe’s chief, forms a bond with soldier John Smith that cuts across a growing conflict. Irene Bedard voices Pocahontas, whose pull toward the land and its traditions collides with the settlers’ ambitions, while Mel Gibson gives Smith a swaggering outsider’s presence. With songs, river-and-forest imagery, and a romance framed by mistrust between two communities, the story turns a familiar legend into an encounter between people meeting on unequal ground.
