At the turn of the 20th century, daredevil The Great Leslie persuades automakers to back a publicity race from New York to Paris, heading west across America, the Bering Strait, and Russia. Tony Curtis is Leslie, the white-suited hero at the center of the spectacle, while Jack Lemmon's black-clad Professor Fate enters a machine of his own and sets out to outmaneuver him from the start. Natalie Wood joins the scramble as the race barrels from city streets to remote terrain, with Blake Edwards building the competition into an increasingly elaborate chain of sabotage, mishaps, and slapstick one-upmanship.
