After everyone in the Northern California town of Midwich collapses at once, several local women wake up pregnant — and nine months later, their children arrive eerily alike. Christopher Reeve is Dr. Alan Chaffee, the town physician trying to make sense of the event, while Kirstie Alley's Susan Verner, a federal investigator, pushes for answers from outside the community. Directed by John Carpenter, the film turns the town's ordinary routines into something colder and stranger as the children mature at an unnatural rate and begin showing a shared intelligence that lets them get inside the adults' heads.
