Rani Mukerji is Lachchi, a new bride whose merchant husband leaves on business the day after their wedding. When he seems to return only days later, Shah Rukh Khan’s Kishanlal is not the man she married but a ghost who has taken his form after falling in love with her. The story turns on that impossible arrangement: a wife, an absent husband, and a spirit stepping into his place. Drawn from Indian folk-tale tradition, Paheli mixes romance, comedy, songs, and the supernatural around questions of marriage, identity, and what it means to be truly seen.
