The Lover

DramaRomance115 min

A poor French teenage girl begins a secret affair with a wealthy Chinese heir in 1920s Saigon, crossing the racial, class, and family lines of colonial Indochina. Jane March is the girl, discovering how much control she can hold over an older lover; Tony Leung Ka-fai’s heir is pulled toward her despite the expectations of his respectable family. Their relationship unfolds through clandestine meetings and sexual awakening, with Jeanne Moreau’s narration framing the story as a memory of adolescence, desire, and the social pressures closing in around them.
