Happy as Lazzaro

DramaFantasyMystery128 min

In rural Italy, a purehearted teenage sharecropper named Lazzaro sees his world shift when he strikes up an unlikely friendship with the marquise’s son. Adriano Tardiolo is Lazzaro, an open, trusting presence at the center of a farming community ruled by old hierarchies and isolation. The film threads peasant labor, aristocratic control, and fable-like turns into the story, with Alba Rohrwacher and Sergi López among the faces around Lazzaro as it moves from earthy village life toward something more mysterious.
