Young political operative Henry Burton is recruited to help run Governor Jack Stanton’s presidential campaign and quickly finds himself inside a world of handshakes, spin, and constant damage control. Adrian Lester is Henry, the idealistic newcomer watching the machine up close, while John Travolta’s Stanton wins over rooms as easily as he creates problems for his staff. Emma Thompson threads steel through Susan Stanton, Jack’s equally ambitious wife, with Billy Bob Thornton and Kathy Bates among the campaign’s sharper elbows. Loosely echoing the 1992 presidential race, the film moves through back rooms, bus stops, press scrums, and the scandals that threaten to derail a White House bid.
