A death tied to a Monterey elementary school sends police back through the friendships, marriages, and secrets of three mothers whose carefully managed lives are coming apart. Reese Witherspoon's Madeline is a fixture of the school-parent scene, quick with a grievance and already tangled in family drama, while Nicole Kidman is Celeste, whose elegant home life hides abuse behind closed doors. Shailene Woodley's Jane arrives as a younger single mother, uneasy in this wealthy coastal circle and carrying her own history into it. As school politics, custody fights, and private resentments build, the mystery keeps circling one question: how did this community end up here?
