A rough-around-the-edges crew of New Mexico cowboys gets an unlikely shot at the Kentucky Derby when their crooked-footed racehorse qualifies for Churchill Downs. Skeet Ulrich and Christian Kane lead the small horse outfit as they haul their long-shot contender from the Southwest into the polished world of Kentucky racing, dealing with mishaps and skepticism before they ever reach the track. Drawn from the true story of Mine That Bird, the film follows an undersized horse and the people behind him as outsiders in one of the sport’s most tradition-bound arenas, with Derby-winning jockey Calvin Borel appearing as himself.
